Legislative Action

At a time when most Americans, including most American Catholics, have embraced legal equality for LGBT people, the Catholic bishops are using their influence to oppose equality.

Catholics for Equality will identify, promote, and amplify pro-equality Catholic voices in public debates on issues such as:

  • preventing anti-LGBT discrimination in the workplace and public accommodation
  • allowing gay and lesbian people to serve openly in the armed forces
  • giving individuals in same-sex relationships an equal right to sponsor their partners for immigration
  • providing legal recognition and protections for same-sex couples through marriage equality and allowing the full freedom to adopt neglected and abandoned children and bring them into loving families.

Catholics for Equality will work closely with other civil rights and social justice organizations to make sure that legislators hear from pro-equality Catholics when their voices are most urgently needed.
