New Jersey Governor Chris Christie

Catholics Express Disappointment
in NJ Gov. Christie's Veto on Civil Marriage Equality

Group Calls Governor Christie a "Republican Catholic School Yard Bully"

TRENTON - Catholics for Equality, the country's largest national political organization of Catholics who put their faith into ethical and effective political action on behalf of the LGBT community and their families, representing the views of over 75 million American Catholics, released the following statement today in response to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for vetoing marriage equality legislation passed by the New Jersey State Legislature:

Catholics for Equality expresses our deep disappointment in our Catholic brother, Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey for vetoing the will of the NJ State legislature that civil marriage equality be extended to the citizens of New Jersey. We are disappointed that Governor Christie lacks he wisdom of fellow Catholic Governors Andrew Cuomo (NY), Christine Gregoire (WA), John Lynch (NH) and Martin O'Malley (MD) to see that you can protect sacramental/religious marriage in our churches, while ending discrimination around civil/legal marriage in our city halls. But more, we are disappointed and angry that he so callously turned his back on the many Catholic families from across the great state of New Jersey who made their voices heard in support for their lesbian and gay family members. To them, he is not just a disappointment, but a Republican Catholic school yard bully stomping on their loved ones and their fundamental freedom to legally marry.
