Catholics for Equality Applauds the
Reintroduction of the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA)

TAKE ACTION!

WASHINGTON - Catholics for Equality, a national organization of Catholics who put their faith into ethical and effective political action on behalf of the LGBT community and their families, applauds today's reintroduction by Congressman Jerry Nadler and Senator Patrick Leahy of the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA). Under the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents may sponsor their spouses (and other immediate family members) for immigration purposes. But same-sex partners of U.S. citizens and permanent residents are not considered "spouses," and their partners cannot sponsor them for family-based immigration. Consequently, many same-sex, bi-national couples are kept apart or torn apart.

The Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) would remedy this injustice and allow U.S. citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their same-sex partners (called "permanent partners" in UAFA) for family-based immigration. The legislation amends the definitions sections of the Immigration and Nationality Act to include definitions for "permanent partner" and "permanent partnership." UAFA will provide lesbian and gay individuals the same opportunity as different-sex, married couples to sponsor their partner.

"69% of American Catholics support legalization of the same basic rights accorded to married heterosexual couples for gays and lesbians in long-term committed relationships," stated Rev. Dr. Joseph Palacios, Director of the Catholics for Equality Foundation. "Catholic social teaching has long held that family unification and the freedom to migrate are fundamental human rights. This is pro-family and pro-life legislation that the vast majority of American Catholics support. In my many years working with immigrants I know that their greatest concern is for family unification. UAFA provides fair and humane legislation to unite all families."

Catholics for Equality has named UAFA as one of its top legislative priorities and urges supporters to use their online action center to easily learn where their Members of Congress stand on the bill and to send personal messages, urging co-sponsorship. The online action center allows Catholic lesbian and gay bi-national couples to submit testimonials, which will be used to lobby Congress. It also prompts supporters to download the same Catholic-specific messaging on this issue the organization provided each of the 24 Catholic Senators and 133 Catholic Representatives in the 112th Congress, and to use these talking points during in-district meetings with legislators and their district staff.
