Catholic Families Testify for Equality!

Jennifer Ehrentraut Segro

Catholics for Equality was honored this week to be asked to testify before the New Jersey State Assembly Judiciary Committee, in support of their highly publicized marriage equality bill. But more powerful than anything in our organizational testimony of polling and statistics were the raw and emotional testimonies from the multitude of pro-equality NJ Catholics who stepped up to fill the hearing room and speak from their hearts. Testimony after testimony, Catholic after Catholic, one after another ... it seemed endless. And these were not just faithful lesbian and gay Catholics, they were Catholic mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, and entire Catholic families showing up to demand legal equality for their lesbian and gay family members. It was as profound as it was beautiful.

One testimony in particular brought the entire room to tears. It was from Jennifer Ehrentraut Segro who talked about how her entire Catholic family has been hurt by anti-LGBT prejudice. Shortly before her own marriage, their family received news that her first cousin, Rutgers student Tyler Clementi, took his own life after being the victim of a gay related bullying incident. Through her words and her tears she spoke for her cousin, Tyler, as we all are were told by Jesus to speak for those who have no voice -- for the poor, the sick, and like Tyler and other LGBT people, for the marginalized and the oppressed.

Catholic family members like Jennifer have a powerful impact on how policy makers look at laws that affect LGBT people and our entire Catholic community. Please ask your Catholic family to use our online action center to send powerful Catholic-specific messages to their Members of Congress on these important pieces of legislation:

Lastly, please encourage them to lend their voice to the campaign. And if you can, please help us financially by making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support for equality!
