Catholics for Equality Urges Supporters to
Call & Tweet Senate Offices to Repeal DADT

Group Lists Catholic Senators for Special Phone Calls & Tweets on Day of Key Senate Vote

WASHINGTON - Catholics for Equality urges pro-equality and fair-minded Catholics nationwide to call their Senators tonight and tomorrow in support for repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell.  The action alert goes out the night before the U.S. Senate is poised to vote for cloture of the Defense Authorization Act - a vote which could decide the fate of any chance for repeal this year.

The group makes a special appeal to Catholic Senators to stand up to the promise of President John F. Kennedy and vote in line with the overwhelming majority of Catholic voters in their state who support repeal.

"Speaking out as pro-equality Catholics is so important to the legislative process," said Former State Legislator and Catholics for Equality Board Member Patsy Trujillo.  "We are confident that Senators will honor dedication and patriotism when they see it and are proud to have helped these brave soldiers make sure their voices are heard.  Further, we trust our Catholic Senators will vote in their conscience and the will of the pro-equality Catholics in their state, and not the misinformed dictates of Rome."

Supporters are urged to call their Senators through the Capitol Hill Switchboard: 202.224.3121

Last week, through a lobbying effort sponsored by Servicemembers United, leaders of Catholics for Equality walked the halls of Congress calling on key Senators and Catholic leaders to support the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell.  In addition, the group issued a letter to to Archbishop Timothy Broglio, Archbishop for the Military Services in the United States of America requesting a meeting to address inaccurate and misleading statements made in a June 1, 2010, statement against the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell

Catholics for Equality will work to provide accurate information and support to Catholic Members of Congress and related religious leaders as they navigate productive ways to be faithful Catholics who defend the freedoms and liberties of all Americans, including our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender brothers and sisters.   For more information about Catholics for Equality's position on Don't' Ask Don't Tell, go to: http://catholicsforequality.org/page/freedom-serve
